The next generation of nuclear power stations is likely to have long intervals between refuelling and may even be fuelled for life. This greatly reduces the opportunities for inspection so there is great interest in techniques that can remotely monitor the structure for growth of fatigue damage. This project is investigating the possibility of using electromagnetic or ultrasonic measurements to monitor fatigue of austenitic steels, particularly at high temperatures. The project is being done in collaboration with Professor Peter Nagy of University of Cincinnati who is also a Visiting Professor in the group.
