What we do
Helping students, academic staff and researchers in science, engineering and medicine develop their language and communication skills to participate effectively in the academic community
We offer a pre-sessional programme and in-sessional courses, workshops, consultations and other resources to help our students develop their academic language and literacy and to help them successfully complete their studies. In addition, we offer classes focused on everyday English for different social contexts to enhance students' communication skills and employability.
We provide free, dedicated support to Imperial College London undergraduate students in science, engineering and medicine and to students visiting the College on an exchange programme such as Erasmus or UROP, who are studying an undergraduate degree. Find out more here.
The Master's English Programme provides dedicated, free support to students studying science, engineering and medicine MSc and MRes courses at Imperial College London. There are two strands to the Programme: workshops and one-to-one consultations with a CfAE tutor. Find out more here.
Postgraduate research students who are not native speakers of English must fulfil the Imperial College London Postgraduate English Requirement as soon as possible after enrolling onto their PhD programme. This requirement separate from and in addition to meeting the College English entry requirements. The aim of the requirement is to help and encourage students to work on their English language skills, particularly writing, and to ensure that they receive the necessary support throughout their PhD. Find out more here.
Academic staff, visiting PhD students and researchers
For academic staff, visiting PhD students and researchers in science, engineering and medicine, we provide a range of English language support for academic, social and professional purposes. Find out more here.
Other courses we offer
Our pre-sessionals are full-time, intensive summer courses which aim to develop the academic language, social language, study skills and cultural knowledge needed for effective and successful study at Imperial. Find out more here.
In addition to our standard provision, we offer bespoke courses for both Imperial College London members and other STEM institutions. Find out more here.
