Full diagnostic assessment

Imperial can offer a full diagnostic assessment to students who have been screened by the Disability Advisory Service. The purpose of a diagnostic assessment is to identify a specific learning difficulty (SpLD) or autism. The assessment will be carried out by an external assessor who will produce a diagnostic report. 

Frequently asked questions about full diagnostic assessments

How do I get referred for a diagnostic assessment?

You need to make an appointment to have a screening. If the results of the screening indicate an SpLD or autism, you will be referred for a diagnostic assessment. 
You can only get diagnostic assessment if:
  • you are currently enrolled;
  • you are not on an interruption of study;
  • you have been screened and referred by us. 
 

Can I have a diagnostic assessment in my final year?

You will only be assessed if your diagnostic assessment is scheduled three months before the end of your studies.  

How much does it cost?

Diagnostic assessments cost £375 (for SpLD), and well over £1000 (for autism). However, we ask students to contribute a payment of £95 only. 
Once payment has been received, we will contact you to offer you an appointment for an assessment.  

What if I can't afford to pay?

You can apply to the Student Support Fund which may be able to fund your contribution towards the cost of an assessment on your behalf.

If you are a medical student, you can apply for the School of Medicine hardship Fund for financial support. 

Diagnostic assessments for SpLDs

Specific learning difficulties must be identified by either a psychologist or an assessor with a PATOSS practising certificate in line with SASC guidance. Assessments are completed on a 1:1 basis and consist of a series of standardised ability, literacy and cognitive tasks (or tests) and an interview. The assessments lasts around 2.5 to 3 hours and are carried out on campus. 

Diagnostic assessments for autism

Autistic assessments are carried out on campus by staff from the Owl Centre. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is used to assess your abilities in the key areas of the autistic spectrum, which are differentiated using the ADOS coding system.  Assessments consist of:
  • a cognitive assessment;
  • an interview;
  • and a developmental history discussion with someone who has known you for a long time and watched you grow up. This is usually a parent. 

If this person does not speak English, you will be required to pay for any interpreting costs incurred. Please get in touch with us if you need help in obtaining an interpreter for this purpose. 

What happens if I miss my diagnostic assessment?

Once your assessment appointment has been booked, you will be required to give us 48 hours’ notice should you wish to cancel. If you fail to attend your assessment and do not give us 48 hours’ notice, then you will be charged an additional £50 administration charge in order to rebook the assessment. This additional fee can be paid online.
