Information on free software for students

Antivirus software

We offer Symantec Endpoint Protection software (for Windows and Mac machines) available to protect hardware against viruses. This software should be preinstalled on Imperial College London machines.

Staff and students can install Symantec Endpoint Protection free of charge on personal computers. Register to download: Software Shop.

Note: You can install this software on Windows 7 machines by using the Windows 8 installer.

Autodesk

Autodesk offers online educational resources to inspire and engage students in problem-solving, collaboration and creative thinking.

CES

CES enables systematic selection of materials for engineering.

CES is only available to students in Aeronautical, Civil, Design and Mechanical Engineering only.

ChemDoodle

ChemDoodle a chemical sketcher/drawing application.

ChemDoodle works on all operating systems, is available free of charge to all College members and can be downloaded onto both College-owned and personal computers. The College licence expires on the 28 November 2016.

INSTRUCTIONS

To download ChemDoodle, follow these steps:

  1. Go to: https://www.chemdoodle.com/download.
  2. Launch the program.
  3. Click the I have a Site Licence button and provide your College email address to request an Activation Code.

The ChemDoodle Activation Code will be emailed to you.

ChemDraw Professional 16

ChemDraw Professional 16 is a powerful desktop modelling program that enables synthetic chemists and biologists to generate 3D models of small molecules and biochemical compounds and to perform a variety of calculations and actions on the models to explore properties and interactions.

ChemDraw Professional 16 is available for free to all College account holders and can be downloaded onto your College-owned and personal computers.

The College licence expires on 23rd August 2017.

CSDS

Cambridge Structural Database System from the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Cetnre is a repository and curated resource for the three-dimensional structural data of molecules.

This licence runs until 31 March 2017 and covers all members of Imperial College London on College-owned machines only. 

Matlab

Matlab (MATrix LABoratory) is a multiparadigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language. Developed by MathWorks, Matlab allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces and interfacing with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, Java, Fortran and Python.

Matlab is free to all students except those in the Faculty of Medicine. The charge for Medicine students is £25. Once you have registered, you will receive an email with the instructions you need to download and install the software.

Mestrenova

The Department of Chemistry bought a College-wide permanent site licence for Mestrenova. The licence is available to all members of College including students and can be installed on private machines as well. Both Windows and Mac versions are available.

Microsoft Imagine

Imagine is a Microsoft program that provides students with software design and development tools free of charge.

Register for a download. College login required.

Microsoft Office 365

Install the latest version of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and much more on up to five compatible PCs and Macs, plus five tablets, including iPad. All of your work can be saved in OneDrive for Business so it is accessible no matter which device you use. The same software and more is also available to you when you use a public PC on Imperial College London premises.

You can use this Office 365 subscription for as long as you are a student at Imperial. When you leave Imperial, your free subscription will end and you will need to subscribe to consumer or commercial offers from Microsoft to keep using Office or uninstall and use alternative software.

MSC Software student edition

Multidisciplinary computer-aided engineering (CAE) and simulation software is available free of charge to you, as an Imperial College London student. Download it directly from MSC Software.

NAG

Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) who provide expertise in numerical engineering, by delivering high-quality computational software (mostly used by FoNS, ICT and Chemical Engineering)is now centrally funded. Students and staff are entitled to use the software listed below on both personal and work machines.

OriginPro 2017

Origin is available to Faculty of Natural Sciences (FONS) students free of charge. If you are eligible, please login to the ICT Shop and register to download Origin for home or on site use.   

Members of other faculties can purchase Origin for £50 for a College-owned machine or £20 for a personal machine: Discounted software for students.

Silverfrost Fortran 95 - Personal edition

You can download Silverfrost Fortran 95 compiler - Personal edition directly from Silverfrost (formerly called the Salford Fortran compiler).

This product is not directly supported by us and is for personal use only. You must uninstall it when you leave Imperial College London.

Solidworks

Solidworks is only available to undergraduate and taught postgraduate Bio Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Dyson School of Design Engineering and Materials students. We cannot sell individual licences.

VMware

Free licences for VMware are to be used for research and teaching purposes only.

Get VMware

  • Go to the VMware website.
  • Click Sign in.     
  • Select Imperial College London. You will be redirected to the Imperial College authentication page.
  • Enter your College username and password. An email will be sent with a link to the download.
