Chemistry and materials (abstracting and data services)

Chemical abstracts: SciFinder
1907 onwards.
All areas of chemistry and chemical engineering, including applied chemistry, biochemistry, macromolecular chemistry, organic chemistry and physical, inorganic and analytical chemistry. Suitable for materials information.

Provides thermophysical property data for about 25,000 pure compounds and 115,000 mixtures. DETHERM contains Literature values, together with bibliographical information, descriptors and abstracts. 5.6 million data sets are currently stored. The following properties are stored:  Phase equilibrium data, Vapor pressures, critical data, Thermodynamic properties, Transport properties, Surface tension, Electrolyte data.

Consists of 400 volumes, 250,000 substances and 1,200,000 citations covering a range of subjects including physical chemistry and crystallography.

NIST/TRC Web Thermo Tables
This web application provides access to a collection of critically evaluated thermodynamic property data for pure compounds with a primary focus on organics.

ProQuest (Select Engineering subset)
Includes Ceramic Abstracts, Corrosion Abstracts, Engineered Materials Abstracts, METADEX.

18th Century onwards.
Covers Organic and inorganic Chemistry - preparations of compounds, reactions and properties.Searchable by structure, chemical name, CAS number, bibliographic information or property variables. Includes organic and inorganic chemicals.  Previously known as Beilstein and Gmelin.

Engineering databases (abstracting services)

1884 onwards.
All fields of engineering, including related areas of applied science, management, and energy.

1969 onwards.
Physics, electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, control engineering and information technology.

Energy (abstracts and full text)

Scitech Connect
Technical reports, bibliographic citations, journal articles, conference papers, books, multimedia, and data information from the US Department of Energy from the 1940s onwards.

INIS (IAEA: International Nuclear Information System)
Information system on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. Provides a bibliographic database with abstracts and a collection of full-text documents.

This is a full text database produced by SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) that includes papers from journals and conference proceedings made available by 17 publishers including NACE, SPE and WPC.  Coverage is predominantly of the oil and gas exploration industry but there is also information on corrosion in nuclear facilities and issues relating to broader energy issues.

PubMed comprises more than 25 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher websites.

Comprehensive Physiology (includes Handbook of Physiology)
A very useful resource for information on health and medical topics. According to their website, it is "the most authoritative and comprehensive collection of physiology information ever assembled, and uses the most powerful features of review journals and electronic reference works to cover the latest key developments in the field, through the most authoritative articles on the subjects covered".

Multidisciplinary databases

Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science)
1970 onwards.
Natural, physical, earth, environmental, biomedical, and life sciences; chemistry, agriculture, clinical medicine, engineering, technology and applied sciences, and computer and information science.

Database of 2,500 journals and thousands of books published primarily by Elsevier.  Use this in conjunction with resources that cover citations from a wide range of publishers such as Web of Science or Scopus.

Scopus is the largest abstracting and indexing database of peer reviewed literature in the world. It is useful for all subjects and particularly multidisciplinary subject areas. It has several easy to use tools and includes “cited by” information.  It has comprehensive coverage from 1996 onwards.

Wiley Online Library
A database of reference books and journals published by Wiley.  Use this in conjunction with resources that cover citations from a wide range of publishers such as Web of Science or Scopus.
