Members of the NHS and Imperial College London medical students on NHS-commissioned courses are eligible for access to the NHS Core Content collection via OpenAthens.                 

OpenAthens is an identity management system facilitating access to information resources commissioned by the NHS. On registration users receive a username and password giving access to resources both on and off-site, at any time.

All NHS staff and Imperial undergraduate Medicine students are entitled to an OpenAthens account. For a comprehensive list of authorised users see OpenAthens eligibility.

What does OpenAthens provide?

It provides access to online resources including: clinical databases, electronic journals, e-books, NICE Apps (BNF and BNFC) and guidance.

How to register

Registration is via a two-step self-registration process:

1. Complete the online registration form - access the page from an NHS computer, or provide an NHS email address, to speed up the process and get your username within an hour.

2. Once completed and deemed eligible, you will receive an email containing an activation hyperlink. Click this link to set up your password, agree to the OpenAthens Terms & Conditions and activate your account. Make sure you do this BEFORE logging on to BNF.

OpenAthens for undergraduate Medicine students

Imperial College London medical students on NHS-commissioned courses are eligible for access to the NHS Core Content collection for the duration of their course. Your course must include a placement with an NHS provider.

What does OpenAthens provide?

It provides access to online resources including: clinical databases, electronic journals, e-books, NICE Apps (BNF and BNFC) and guidance.

How to register

Most undergraduate students will be automatically registered at the start of their course.

You will receive an email containing an activation hyperlink. Click on this link to set up your own password, agree to the OpenAthens Terms & Conditions and activate your account. Make sure you do this BEFORE logging on to BNF.
