The risk of a significant outbreak of flu among staff and students is now remote and, as a result, special measures to prevent the spread of infection and to monitor for deterioration into severe illness are no longer warranted.
The advice below has been issued to wardens and hall managers.
Advice for students
Managing flu cases
Any student diagnosed with swine flu should still be encouraged to stay in their room as much as possible until their symptoms have settled. It is now unnecessary to require them to wear masks if leaving their room or when visitors are present. It is also unnecessary for wardens to actively monitor them on a daily basis, or to wear a mask if visiting them.
Getting help
Students who are concerned that they may be developing flu should be advised to contact the Health Centre by phone (020 7584 6301 or 020 7594 9375/6) for assessment, rather than the Pandemic Flu Line. Now that the prevalence of swine flu is very low, the probability that a feverish illness will be some other illness is high, so it is more sensible for the student to seek help from their GP than the phone line.
Vaccination
The Health Centre is still running special flu vaccination clinics for students and wardens in health risk groups. Vaccination is still recommended for these people.
