At Imperial, we’re putting engagement into practice across our nine campuses as well as at schools, hospitals, cultural and community spaces. This builds on a proud legacy of civic engagement: Imperial has always been deeply rooted in London life and our pioneering research has brought benefits to wider society since 1907. We’ve found a real sense of momentum for engagement amongst the College community. Collaboration is at the heart of engagement and we’re excited to work with our staff and students to help them realise their ideas.

Our goals

  1. Towards confident communities – To provide inspirational and accessible experiences to diversify and increase the range of people who feel confident about participating in Science, Engineering, Medicine and Business - related decisions and activities that affect their lives.
  2. Gaining new perspectives – To enhance our work, through facilitating connections that enable our staff and students to listen and respond to a diverse range of non-academic perspectives on our research and teaching.
  3. Tackling shared challenges – Working with our public communities to tackle our shared challenges, because together we can solve the issues affecting us, locally and globally.
  4. Enabling culture change – To enable our staff and students to deliver mutually-rewarding societal engagement experiences and to evaluate their impact.
  5. Profile-raising – To enhance Imperial’s profile and reputation among wider society, most especially the public, to expand our network of collaborators in research, societal engagement and teaching.

About the Societal Engagement Framework

The Societal Engagement Framework has been developed to bring about a step change in our approach to societal engagement. It aims to strengthen how we recognise, support and embed engagement with the public as an integral part of our work. There are four key areas of focus:

  • Schools outreach and widening participation
  • Local community engagement
  • Patient engagement
  • Engagement with research
