Independent fellowships

Relevant fellowships

Research fellowships are designed to promote and support research excellence in engineering. The Department and Imperial College London want to attract the best and most outstanding researchers, providing a high level of support and freedom to focus on the research through fellowships. Such prestigious research fellowship schemes provide the best opportunity to consolidate the standing of a researcher in their community and ultimately can help make the leap from a postdoctoral researcher to an academic lecturer.

Research fellowship schemes are very competitive as only a very small number can be supported by the Department and College. Hence, in order to be able to secure a sponsorship (as each application must be supported by a sponsor who is a senior, permanent member of academic staff) applicants need to go through our Departmental selection process first, which is explained in more detail in the next tab. Please do check the notes thoroughly.

These are the relevant fellowships of which we are currently aware:

Application process

Due to the departmental preparation required, research fellowship applicants must please contact a sponsor at least two months before the call deadline.

  • Step 1: Please contact a prospective academic sponsor in the appropriate research area but with whom you are not collaborating already. In many cases, fellowship applications need to be endorsed by the Head of the Department by providing a Letter of Support (LoS) which must be requested by the sponsor with plenty of lead time.

  • Step 2: Once a sponsor has been agreed, please submit a CV and supporting statement (1x A4) to Allan Nyunt (a.nyunt@imperial.ac.uk).
    Allan will guide you through the process of obtaining departmental and financial approval.

  • Step 3: Fellowship applications will then be considered by our Departmental Fellowship Panel. Review criteria include:

      a. The researcher's academic excellence and fit to the Department;
      b. The researcher's research vision;
      c. The availability of suitable departmental resources.

Sometimes fellowship calls may require additional screening, for example, to be interviewed by the Fellowship Panel.

Postdoctoral research fellowships

Relevant fellowships

Fellowships typically provide a great opportunity to build and enhance a researcher's career.

Application process

Due to the departmental preparation required, postdoctoral fellowship applicants are asked to apply well in advance, but at least 6 weeks before the call deadline.

  • Step 1: Please contact a prospective academic sponsor in the appropriate research area.
  • Step 2: Please contact Allan Nyunt (a.nyunt@imperial.ac.uk), emailing your CV, the description of the targeted fellowship, and 2 paragraphs from the academic sponsor, explaining why it is a suitable match.
  • Step 3: Allan will then also guide you through the internal process to obtain financial approval from Imperial College.
  • If the fellowship scheme requires a financial contribution by the Department, the fellowship application has to be approved by the Department Management Committee.
    This typically takes 4 weeks.
