Training
The BSDG has a long track record in designing and running short modular practical training courses in bioinformatics.
We have previously been awarded a BBSRC training initiative (PeST) grant to co-develop and deliver courses on High Throughput Computing for Bionformatics, together with the Department of Computing (John Darlington). Examples of the courses we have previously run are listed below:
- Introduction to the Bioinformatics Data Science Group
- Getting Started with the BDSG Login Service
- Basic sequence alignment
- Multiple sequence alignment for proteins
- Introduction to biological databases and database searching
- Introduction to Ensembl
- Perl programming for bioinformatics
- Introduction to Java programming
- Introduction to Python programming for bioinformatics
Due to a change in our primary mission statement, we are not currently running these training courses but we have plans to update and develop new ones in the future which will be advertised here.
Bespoke training
We offer informal training for individuals or small groups tailored to specific topics as required, which are chargeable at our (link: standard rates). Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Commercial software
We are still hosting regular 1-2 day training workshops for commercial software that we license. These include GeneSpring, Parkek and Ingenuity Pathway Assist and run on average twice a year. Dates for future courses are advertised here.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching
We undertake teaching on selected courses, for instance the MSc Bioinformatics and Theoretical Systems Biology - this includes project supervision for the group project and 2 individual projects undertaken by students.
The material taught is customised for the specific needs of each course and we can provide individual lectures, complete day(s) teaching and/or practical sessions. If you would be interested in us providing a bioinformatics component for a course please contact us.
