We offer a variety of one-to-one appointments throughout the year to support you at any stage of career planning. You may want to clarify career options, find opportunities, explore further study routes or you may require specific support with an application, interview or preparation for a selection event. No matter what your career related questions are, we’re here to help!

Our appointments typically occur between 10:00 and 17:00 Monday to Friday (during term time) and 13:00 – 17:00 (during vacations) but you’ll need to book in advance via JobsLive. Typically, our appointments open for booking at 07:00 on the day of the appointment (although there are some exceptions detailed in the information below). 

Students who have disclosed certain disabilities to the Disability Advisory Service (DAS) may be eligible for a direct access to our “Careers Consultation (by referral)” appointments. For further information about this please liaise with the DAS, email us or phone us on +44 (0)20 7594 8024.

Please note:

  • By accessing the appointment booking page in JobsLive early in the day you will see the full range of appointment times offered. Appointments typically open for booking at 07:00 on the day of the appointment
  • Our appointments are generally offered in person at our South Kensington Campus, however, students at other campuses will be able to book appointments at their local campus too within JobsLive. If you are unable to get to campus because you are on a study break, year in industry or outside the UK on vacation etc, please contact us to discuss alternative telephone or Skype arrangements.
  • We strongly recommend that you make use of our online resources before attending an appointment to make the most of the interaction.

Terms & Conditions:

  • Your Jobslive account may be suspended if you fail to attend a booked appointment without first contacting the Careers Service to cancel.
  • To ensure fair access to our appointments you may only book one appointment per day and we limit you to three appointments of each type per academic term.

Appointments

Careers Discussion (CV check + more)

Purpose: Discuss any aspect of your career and/or check CVs, cover letters and applications. Our Careers Consultants offer you confidential, one-to-one advice and guidance on topics including your career options, finding and exploring opportunities of interest, further study routes, deciding on your next step, and help with applications including CVs, cover letters, interviews, online tests and assessment centres.

Duration: 20 minutes

Restrictions: Available to all students and alumni (up to three years from end of studies)

Careers Consultation (by referral)

Purpose: More detailed and in-depth conversations with a Careers Consultant can be made available to students who require additional support or advice. The Careers Consultant will typically have specific knowledge or experience in the particular area of discussion.

Duration: 40 minutes

Staff Member: Careers Consultant

Restrictions: available to all students and alumni (up to three years from end of studies) on a referral basis from a Careers Service staff member.

How To Book: Accessible only via referral from a Careers Discussion (CV check + more), Work Experience Discussion (internships + more)*. Once a referral has been activated on JobsLive you can book an appointment up to three weeks in advance.

Mock Interview (by referral)

Purpose: Practice your interview technique and receive feedback on your performance from a Careers Consultant. These sessions allow you to specify the areas and/or questions that you would like to focus on and can be tailored to specific industries and roles as required.

Duration: 40 minutes

Restrictions: available to all students and alumni (up to three years from end of studies) on a referral basis from a Careers Service staff member.

How To Book: Please contact us directly to discuss your needs and arrange an appointment. We would strongly encourage you to make use of the Interviews section of our website prior to booking and/or to attend a relevant presentation or workshop to make the most of a mock interview.

Careers Consultation (Postdocs)

Purpose: Explore any career related topic you wish to discuss including interview practice, preparing CVs and applications, working out careers ideas and strategy for achieving the next stage in your professional life.

Duration: 40 minutes

Restrictions: Only available to early stage research staff (typically up to 5 years from completion of PhD)

Internship Discussion (CV check + more)

Purpose: Discuss finding and applying to work experience opportunities including internships, placements and volunteering. Our Placement & Internship Advisors can provide advice on speculative applications and creating your own internship or discuss our programmes including the Alumni Mentoring Scheme, Work Shadowing, Charity Insights and/or SME Internships.

Duration: 20 minutes

Restrictions: Available to all undergraduate students (excluding finalists).

Quick CV or Cover Letter Check

Purpose: Have a CV or cover letter checked by an Imperial PhD student trained to provide feedback. These sessions provide a great opportunity to have your CV or cover letter reviewed and receive hints and tips on how to improve. Please note the PhD students will only check CVs and cover letters and will not provide any other careers information or guidance. If you require further support please book a “Careers Discussion (CV check + more)”.

Duration: 15 minutes

Staff Member: Trained PhD Student

Restrictions: available to all undergraduate and Masters’ students during the Autumn Term however only CVs and cover letters can be checked in this type of appointment.
