What is UROP?

UROP provides an opportunity for students who have yet to graduate from their Masters degree to participate in real research during the summer. Placements typically last around 6 to 12 weeks. There are many placements available within the Department of Chemistry each year. Placements are arranged by contacting the appropriate member of staff.

Department of Chemistry: UROP Student Experiences

Xueying jian, Chemistry Undergraduate

Project Title: Rhodium TriPhos Catalyst Towards Levulinic Acid
Supervisor: Dr. Philip Miller
Duration: 8 weeks, Summer 2015
I learnt about UROP from the college website and I wanted to learn more about research in Chemistry so I applied for this programme. During this 8-week placement I have learnt a lot about doing individual research online using different tools.  I felt more confident in doing experiments especially in 3rd year lab as it is more about doing your own research. I've also done a poster presentation to other staff and students in the department where I have to express my idea clearly and confidently when facing questions.  I also have a clearer insight of what research will be like and it made me think more about my future career path.  I would recommend other students to apply if they are passionate about working in a lab.

During my placement I gained laboratory skills as well as more confidence in completing basic routine lab practices, all of which will have helped to prepare me for the advanced third year lab course."

Chemistry Undergraduate

Project Title: Nitrogen-Rich Framework Materials for Carbon Capture Technology
Supervisor: Dr. Rob Davies
Duration: 8 weeks, Summer 2012

I originally heard of UROP at the beginning of my second academic year at College although I did not pursue a placement until just before the end of the autumn term. During my placement I gained laboratory skills as well as more confidence in completing basic routine lab practices, all of which will have helped to prepare me for the advanced third year lab course.

This placement has increased my confidence in my ability to complete tasks in the lab with good competency and as such given me a good basis for both the third year laboratory course and my final year research projects. The project has also given me an insight into chemical research in an academic environment, and research laboratories – including funding, experimental and analysis work both inside and outside the academic institution.
