Helical stent designed by Professor CG Caro

Determining the mechanisms underlying the local occurrence of certain vascular diseases, detecting their onset and, in some instances, achieving their suppression.

Diseases, including atherosclerosis, which causes heart attack and stroke, and intimal hyperplasia, which can block arterial stents, arterial bypass grafts and arteriovenous fistulae (AVF), employed particularly for patients with kidney failure requiring dialysis, affect particular locations in blood vessels.

The group’s research is principally directed to determining the mechanisms underlying the local occurrence of the diseases, to early detection of their onset and, in some instances, to their suppression.

A recent development has been the formation of a Group (known as the Caro/Renal Group) which focuses on problems arising at AVF.
