Learning outcomes

Demonstrate that cross-sectional properties can be used to fully describe the relationships that link the applied forces and moments acting on a structural element to the resulting stress distribution, described by the stress tensor at any point in the structural element. Demonstrate that material properties can be used to fully describe the constitutive relationship that links the applied stress tensor for a block of material, at any point in a structural element, to the resulting strain tensor. Demonstrate that cross-sectional properties and material properties of a structural element or a structural system can be used through structural analysis methods to fully describe the relationships that link the applied force vector to the resulting displacement vector.
