Dynamics of Structures
Upon successful completion of this module you should be able to: Explain the validity of modelling structures as discrete single or multiple degree-of-freedom systems. Derive and solve the equation of motion for a variety of common cases and find the responses of linear structural systems to dynamic loads. Explain the role played by damping, stiffness and mass on the dynamic response of simple structures. Formulate the equations of motion of multiple degree-of-freedom systems and identify the mass, damping and stiffness matrices. Compute the eigenvalues and the modal vectors and determine the free and forced vibration response of systems using modal analysis. Explain the concepts of coordinate coupling and principal coordinates. Represent signals in both the time and frequency domains and demonstrate a basic understanding of signal analysis.
