Imperial College creates new Genetics and Genomics Research Institute

Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine today announces the creation of the Imperial College Genetics and Genomics Research Institute.

The Institute will provide an identifiable focus for the mass of genetic- and genomic-related research currently underway throughout the College. It will focus the research of over 450 Imperial staff (with an annual grant income of £25 million) currently working in fields related to genetics and genomics

The Institute's research will be directed towards the understanding of common human diseases, microbial, structural and agricultural genomics and bioinformatics. Its headquarters will be located in a purpose built multi-disciplinary research building currently being constructed on the South Kensington campus.

Professor James Scott FRCP FRS has been appointed first director of the Institute. Distinguished for his work on the genetics of cardiovascular risk and for the discovery of RNA editing in higher eukaryotes, Professor Scott heads a team of leading basic and clinical scientists.

Professor Scott said: "Imperial College is home to world class research in physics, mathematics and computing as well as biomedical and biological sciences. Our new Institute will be uniquely placed to develop research synergies across these areas and make possible the new, multi-disciplinary, approaches for 21st century scientific research."

The Institute will draw together expertise in computing and other fields of data interpretation such as bioinformatics, statistical genetics and structural biology, with strong links to theoretical departments such as mathematics and computing.

1. Professor James Scott, 53, is Professor of Medicine and Deputy Vice-Principal for Research at Imperial College School of Medicine, based at the Hammersmith campus in west London. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1997, and to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998.
