Sougato Bose's intriguing essay, 'Partner-swapping Miracles in the Quantum World', captivated judges and won him first prize in the 1999 Wellcome Trust/New Scientist Millenial Science Essay Competition

Science, engineering and technology PhD students were challenged to write 700 informative and challenging words about their research.

Bose, who works in the Optics Section of the Department of Physics, explained how readily quantum objects change partners and how the rules of a quantum world can even apply to politics.

His work guaranteed him first prize and a cheque for £1500. His success was announced at the British Association Annual Festival of Science in Sheffield and his essay appeared in 18 September's New Scientist.
