First brain gain for IC chemistry

PROFESSOR Alexei Kornyshev is one of the first seven recipients of the Research Merit Awards announced last Thursday by Lord Sainsbury, Science Minister.

Professor Kornyshev is coming to the department of chemistry from Germany, the only winner moving to the UK.

Jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the DTI, and run through the Royal Society, the Awards, worth £20 million over five years, aim to attract and retain the best scientific talent in the UK.

Professor David Phillips, head of department, said: "I am absolutely delighted. Professor Kornyshev is one of the most eminent theoretical chemists in the field of electrochemistry and fuel cells. He is already collaborating with colleagues here, and brings real distinction to the department."
