Imperial College Honours 1999

The following have been awarded with Honorary Degrees and Associateships from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. They will be formally conferred by the Chairman of the Court and Council, Lord Vincent of Coleshill at the Postgraduate Awards Ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 12 May 1999.
Doctor of Literature (honoris causa)
- The Lord Puttnam of Queensgate, CBE, Independent film producer since 1968; Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Columbia Pictures (1986-88); Chairman, The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts; Producer of numerous award-winning films including The Killing Fields, Chariots of Fire and Midnight Express.
Doctor of Science (honoris causa)
- Dame Bridget Ogilvie, DBE, ScD, Director of the Wellcome Trust (1991-98); Visiting Professor, Department of Biology, Imperial College (1985-92); Division of Parasitology, National Institute for Medical Research, (1963-81); Chairman, Committee on the Public Understanding of Science from 1998.
- Sir Richard Sykes, DSc, FRS, Chairman, since 1997, and Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive (1993-97), Glaxo Wellcome plc; Chairman and Chief Executive, Glaxo Group Research Ltd (1987-93).
Associateships of Imperial College
- Francis G Irving, MEng, DIC, CEng, FRAeS, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer (1947-91) and Assistant Director (1964-82), Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College; Co-pilot in the first crossing of the English Channel by a two-seat glider in 1955.
- Derek G Miller, HNC, MIMechE, Senior Project Engineer (1978-98) and Design Engineer, Experimental Officer and Senior Experimental Officer (1958-78), High Energy Physics Group, Department of Physics, Imperial College; Worked with IC team on international projects at the Rutherford Laboratory, CERN (Geneva) and DESY (Hamburg) (1958-92).
The following have been elected to the Fellowship of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. They will be formally admitted to the Fellowship by the Chairman of the Court and Council, Lord Vincent of Coleshill at the Commemoration Day Ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 27 October 1999:

- Professor Eric H Brown, CEng, MICE, Emeritus Professor (Structural Analysis), Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College; Dean, City & Guilds College (1979-82); Professor of Structural Analysis, Imperial College (1971-89); Founder member (1949-97) and conductor (1953-97) of the Imperial College Choir.
- Robert J Margetts, CBE, FIChemE, FEng, Governor, Imperial College since 1992; Vice Chairman, Imperial Chemicals Industries plc since 1992.
- Peter E Mee, MBE, TD, Head of College Alumni Relations since 1997; College Secretary and Clerk to the Governors (1996-97), Registrar and Clerk to the Governors (1990-96) and Registrar (1967-96).
- Professor Klaus F Roth, FRS, Visiting Professor of Pure Mathematics, Department of Mathematics, Imperial College (1988-96).
