International recognition for branding project

Imperial's branding project, launched in January 2003, has won a Silver Medal in the Circle of Excellence Awards Program, held by the Council for Advancement and Support in Education (CASE).

Imperial is the only UK institution to achieve recognition in any category of the 2003 Awards Program. The branding project was undertaken to promote a wider understanding of the College's aims and achievements while delivering the tools to promote, portray and position the College more effectively.

The project was directed by Imperial's head of communications, Lynda Davies, in partnership with FutureBrand. David Grainger of FutureBrand commented: "The excellence and quality of its teaching and research have earned Imperial College London the reputation as one of the very best universities in the world. Our opportunity was to help Lynda and her team build on this enviable reputation and express the vision, personality and culture of the university in a dynamic, cosmopolitan and inspiring way."

The initial audit and review of Imperial's key attitudes and audiences was conducted by Geoff Potter, co-founder of Stonehenge Public Relations Ltd. "Imperial are to be congratulated on allowing us to undertake a strategic, in-depth analysis of what the College stands for and how it communicates. The outcome of this study produced a firm foundation for the College to build its rejuvenated brand," he said.

The implementation team leaders included Liz Carr, Kate Fielding, Saskia Daniel, (Communications); Barbara Foran (HR); Andrew Rabeneck, Brian Hill-Samuel, Judy Norman, (Estates); Andy Hitchman, John Whitlow (Purchasing); Paul Hudson, (Catering and Conferences); and Caroline Rouault, (ICT).

"Imperial has done incredibly well to rate so highly in these awards, especially as it is up against the world and not just competing against other UK institutions," said Joanna Motion, vice-president for international operations, CASE Europe. "This is an achievement to be proud of."

Lynda Davies added: "The CASE award brings international recognition for our achievement in taking on a branding project and implementing it effectively. This is tremendous for the College as a whole and rewards the project team in particular for their dedication and effort."

The Silver Medal will be awarded to Imperial College London in September. www.case.org
