Fifty students took part in an in-depth written quiz before numbers were whittled down to eight who competed in two buzzer rounds held in the ICU dining hall.

Richard Hutchinson, a fourth year medical student who competed in Channel 4's Fifteen to One quiz, was chosen as team captain.

He will be joined by Shane Ewert, history of science, medicine and technology, Alex McKitrick, materials, and Jamie Brothwell, physics.

Jason Ho, medicine, will be on standby as the reserve member of the team.

The team, who attended an audition at Southwark television studios, will hear shortly whether they have been successful in qualifying for the television series.

If selected, the first round will be filmed in June.
