Tuesday 30 November 2004

Top new students at Imperial College London's Wye campus have been given a financial boost.

Agricola Scholarships worth up to £3,000 each have been presented to the eight most outstanding students starting Bachelor or Master of Science degree programmes this term. Award-winners were chosen on the basis of excellent performance in previous studies, together with practical experience.

Successful postgraduate students include Gabriella Cocco-Greaves from London (Agribusiness for Development MSc) who until recently was a volunteer for the Fairtrade Foundation promoting the interests of farmers in poorer countries, Chris Penrose-Buckley from London (Managing Rural Development MSc) who has worked for Christian Aid in East Africa, Central Asia and Afghanistan, Amber Teacher from Oxford (Animal Science MRes) who has researched conservation of mammals at the Institute of Zoology and Katie Watson from Canterbury (Environmental Management MSc) who spent last summer studying primates in the Amazon Basin, Peru.

Award-winning undergraduate students include Kwok Kei Mak from Kowloon, Hong Kong and Winson Yeung from Gloucester who are studying for a BSc honours degree in Applied Business Management, Katherine Olley from Dorset (Animal Science (Equine) BSc) and Matthew Yu Wang from Watford, Hertfordshire (Environmental Science BSc).

The annual Agricola Scholarships are funded by Imperial College and the Agricola Club, the association for past students at Wye. They were presented during a short ceremony by Professor Jeff Waage, Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, who congratulated the winners and welcomed them to the worldwide network of Wye students, past and present.

Francis Huntington, Honorary Secretary of the Agricola Club, said he was delighted that the Club, which has more than 3,000 members in 75 countries, was able to put its funds to such a good use.
