Imperial College London is rated best in the UK for five subjects in today's Guardian University Guide. Computing, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering and medicine are all ranked top in their subject.

Other Imperial departments rated highly include physics, ranked second in the country, and materials and maths, both placed third. The College is also placed fourth for chemical engineering and earth sciences and fifth for biosciences, business studies and chemistry.

The league table, based on criteria including teaching quality, staff-student ratios and graduate job prospects, places Imperial in third overall, closely behind Oxford and Cambridge and ahead of London colleges SOAS, LSE, King's and UCL.

Imperial is consistently ranked in the top three UK universities and was recently judged the fifth best higher education institution in Europe and fourteenth in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement.
