As a strong supporter of London's Olympic bid, Imperial College London is delighted at the result announced today. Rector Sir Richard Sykes says:

Sir Richard Sykes

"It is very appropriate that the world's greatest sporting event will be held in the world's greatest city and Im proud that the support of London's universities and colleges has helped to make this happen.

"Students and staff in the capital represent over 200 countries from around the world, providing a broad cultural base for the Olympic ethos."

London's universities put together a package of actions to support the bid, including offering over 12,000 rooms to support the technical and support staff needed to run the Games and providing volunteers and volunteer training. International students in London will also provide translation services for Olympic guests from around the world.

Imperial is no stranger to Olympic success. The 2000 Sydney Olympics saw three Imperial graduates win gold medals rowing in the eights and their coach is also an Imperial alumnus. Sir Richard adds:

"Bringing the Games to London will also be a great advantage for our graduates, staff and future students, who will benefit from the new facilities created for the event. We hope it will result in future successes for the College and the country as a whole."
