Medical Robotics and Image Guided Intervention are two technology driven areas of medicine that have experienced tremendous growth and improvement over the last twenty years, partly driven by the surgical aim of progressively less invasive and harmful treatments.  This course will provide the research experience required to work within the highly innovative field of medical robotics and surgical technology.  All teaching and research will take place in the brand new facilities of the HamlynCentre, which was founded by Professor Guang-Zhong Yang and Lord Ara Darzi, supported by a major endowment from Lady Hamlyn and the Helen Hamlyn Trust, as well as a major medicalrobotics infra-structure grant from the Wolfson Foundation and the NIHR.

This is a multidisciplinary field and is led by three internationally known departments: the HamlynCentre for Medical Robotics (part of the Institute of Global Health Innovation), the Department of Surgery and Cancer and the Department of Computing.  Taught modules include a mixture of engineering and medical topics such as medical robotics and instrumentation, minimally invasive surgery, surgical imaging and optics, image guided intervention, perception and ergonomics.

Students will spend nine months working on a cutting edge research project.  By the end of the course, students will

  • have a broad general knowledge of the current technology used within clinical work;
  • have an interdisciplinary knowledge of the working in collaboration with surgeons to develop new technological advances in the field of surgery;
  • have experience in the methodology and principles of conducting research with application to clinical medicine and surgery; and
  • have the skills required for the participant to have a successful career within industry, or an academic research position such as a PhD studentship.

Scholarship Opportunities

There are three main scholarship sources for the 2015-16 MRes:

  • Faculty of Medicine Master's Scholarships. Application deadline March 2015. Further details can be found on the Faculty of Medicine scholarships website
  • For UK students, the HEFCE-funded scheme offers financial support to academically excellent candidates and takes into account household income.  Deadline TBA.
  • Hamlyn Scholarships offer support for exceptional students. Contact daniel.elson@imperial.ac.uk

Imperial College works closely with employers and industry, including Industrial Advisory Panels to design Master’s courses which provide graduates with technical knowledge, expertise and transferable skills and to encourage students to take internships and placements. All Master’s courses are designed with employer needs in mind with some Mas ter’s courses accredited by Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies. Most Master’s courses offer an opportunity to carry out research projects in industry.

Who should apply?

  • Physical Science, Engineering and Computing graduates who wish to learn how to apply their knowledge and skills to medical and surgical problems.
  • Applicants should have a good UK degree in the physical sciences (2.1 or above or equivalent overseas qualification).
