Surgery and Cancer formed an Academic Opportunities Committee (AOC) in September 2013 with an aim to improve the work environment for all staff and students in the Department. We were awarded Bronze in 2014 and are currently embarked on an ambitious programme to enhance the culture across a Department which integrates an enormous diversity of scientific and medical research activities at the interface of the College and the associated Imperial College Healthcare Trust. We are currently working towards our silver award and expect to apply in spring 2018.
Following the change in the Athena SWAN charter to recognise work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, (not only focusing on barriers to progression that affect women) we decided to change our name from the Academic Opportunities Committee to the Committee for the Promotion of People and Culture. This committee oversees the implication of our action plan, currently being implemented through our dedicated taskforces which focus on education, data, career development, pastoral support, and communication.
