Who we are

In the Department of Surgery and Cancer, we are actively working to increase and support development opportunities to all of our staff. Led by our People and Culture Committee, we champion initiatives to promote the advancement of gender equality, representation, progression and success for all. The Committee's success is reflected by the Department recently receiving the Athena SWAN Silver award.

Lesley Regan

Lesley Regan - Chair

I am the President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St Mary's Hospital. I am also Director of the Women's Health Research Centre and co-director of the UK Pregnancy Baby Bio Bank. I am committed to embedding the culture of Athena SWAN across the Department and have a longstanding commitment towards achieving equality for all in academia.

Hector Keun

Hector Keun - Co-chair

I have worked in the Department since 2001 and am currently a research group leader and co-director of the MRes in Cancer Biology. I joined the committee because I believe that creating the right working culture is crucial for making the Department a success. I am particularly interested in improving support for postgraduate students, early career academic staff and staff with young families.

Chris Peters

Christopher Peters - Co-chair

I have been a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department since 2016, my clinical role is as an Upper GI cancer surgeon and I am Co-Director for the MSc in Surgical Innovation. I joined the committee because I am passionate about making sure that we as a Department are supportive and inclusive, creating an environment where everyone can achieve the very best they can. I hope we can create an atmosphere of collaboration across teams to maximise academic opportunities. In particular, I am interested in supporting junior academic surgeons to develop their research careers.
