Overview

The course objective is to encourage and develop areas of innovation with The Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum at its core.  This module considers the main benign conditions of the stomach and oesophagus.

Themes, aims and teaching

This short course thematically covers fundamental principles behind the treatment and management of Oesophago-gastric surgery benign conditions. Cross-cutting themes within the domains of pathology, investigative, non-surgical treatments and surgery and the controversies around the management of GORD and Achalasia and key emergencies of. Teaching is mainly face to face but attendees will experience and take part in academic debate, visit to the GI physiology laboratory and endoscopy suite with live theatre.

• pathogenesis and clinical presentation of GORD and Achalasia
• principles behind investigations for benign disorders of the stomach and oesophagus
• development of medical treatments
• principles behind surgery for GORD and oesophageal motility disorders
• appraise the evidence base for management of GORD and achalasia
• variation and principles of management of clinical presentation of OG emergencies, including perforation and bleeding

Who is the course suitable for

This short course welcomes surgeons, surgeons in training, healthcare practitioners, nurses, multidisciplinary support staff involved in the care and treatment of Oesophago-gastric patients. Discounts are available for NHS employees. 

What to expect

• World-class tuition and expertise from the domain of Oesophago-gastric surgery.
• The opportunity to work alongside masters students, with a ‘taster’ opportunity for attendees with an eye on postgraduate study
• The option to take part in formal assesment at Masters level in a world class university and receive a transcript from Imperial College. Or if assessment isn’t required you can opt for a certificate of attendance for your portfolio.  
• The course is intense, Monday to Friday, nine to five.  The teaching is mainly face to face but interspersed with debate, interactive workshops and observations in theatre.
