Solution of the continuous Kalman filter equations using the transmission line method
, International Journal of Electronics, Vol: 73, Pages: 271-286, ISSN: 0020-7217A novel method is presented for the solution of the one-dimensional continuous Kalman filter equations implemented on a digital computer. The Kalman filter is implemented in an unusual way as a transmission line circuit. Estimated variables are regarded as discrete pulses bouncing to and from the nodes in the transmission line network at each time step. This approach is tested on a problem of voltage estimation in a passive electrical network in the presence of voltmeter errors. The transmission line method is compared with the results that are obtained using the Gear first- and third-order methods, the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and the application of the discrete Kalman filter. It is found that the transmission line method has a tendency to yield less biased estimates than the other algorithms as well as providing smoother estimates for sampling times approaching the time constant of the circuit. © 1992 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

Spectra of Delta-Sigma Modulated Inverters: An Analytical Treatment
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 7, Pages: 644-654, ISSN: 0885-8993Analytic expressions for the output voltage spectrum of an asynchronous delta (or delta-sigma) modulated inverter are reported and supported by experimental data. The analysis yields three functions that give the frequency, phase, and amplitude of each component of the spectrum. These functions are in terms of the sinusoidal reference waveform and the properties of the modulator. The method provides greater accuracy and computational efficiency than the numerical methods reported to date. The spectral components form pairs of sidebands around multiples of the average switching frequency. The functions detail the relationship between the number of significant sideband components and the depth of modulation and illustrate the “spread spectrum” nature of delta modulation. Extensions to nonsinusoidal reference waveforms and to hysteresis current controllers are considered. © 1992 IEEE
