The modelling of networks with frequently changing topology whilst maintaining a constant system matrix

, International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields, Vol: 3, Pages: 11-21, ISSN: 0894-3370

This paper describes a novel technique with which a system with changing topology can be modelled whilst maintaining a constant system matrix. This technique employs a new transmission‐line switch model which has a constant characteristic impedance, irrespective of its state. The method is explained, compared with the switched‐resistance method and demonstrated by two examples. It has been found that the proposed method offers substantial advantages in the formulation of the problems and in the efficiency of computation. Copyright © 1990 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

A Discrete Approach to the Modeling of Power Electronic Switching Networks

, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 5, Pages: 398-403, ISSN: 0885-8993

A new approach to time-domain analysis and modeling of power electronic circuits is described. All circuit components, including active and passive elements, are modeled in a discrete manner by transmission-line sections using the transmission-line modeling (TLM) method. This method requires a fixed system matrix which depends only on the circuit configuration and time step but not on the switching states of the circuit. The circuit's transient behavior can be modeled easily. The proposed TLM algorithm, which provides a fast and exact solution to the discrete model, can be programmed easily on a desktop computer and is stable even for stiff networks. © 1990 IEEE

    Microprocessor controlled synchronous motor drive

, IEE Conference Publication, Pages: 245-248, ISSN: 0537-9989

With advances in power electronics and microprocessors, self-controlled synchronous motors are becoming more commonly employed for servo drive applications, not only because of their absence of brushes and commutator but more importantly because their characteristics and controllability are similar to those of conventional dc motors. This paper describes a microprocessor-controlled scheme for an inverter-fed synchronous motor drive, particularly suitable in the 10kW-100kW range. A M68000 micro-processor is used to control a 3-phase GTO-based inverter and a switch-mode field feed system. The control scheme is based on the self-synchronised principle, incorporating a rotor angle sensor.

Investigation of delta modulation spectra and of sub-harmonic elimination techniques.

    , Pages: 290-297, ISSN: 0275-9306

The frequency spectrum produced by an inverter controlled by a delta modulator is examined. Analytical expressions are derived that model the spectrum. Computed spectra are compared to practical results, and good agreement is demonstrated. The analysis can be used to illustrate the dependence of the spectra on various modulator properties. The generation of sub- and partial harmonics within such a system can also be explained. A technique has been developed for eliminating sub- and partial harmonics by ensuring that the output waveforms exhibit quarter-wave symmetry. Practical results demonstrate that the technique is successful. The effects that imposing quarter-wave symmetry has on other aspects of the modulator's performance are also considered.
