AB - Dear TomThank you for your comment. We have been studying communication in the operating theatre through video-recordings and detailed interactional analysis. Noise and, in particular, music have been of concern to us. We would like to know if music is played in the theatres you have undertaken the audit in and, if so, did you find this to have an impact on communication? In our forthcoming research paper, we consider this issue in relation to verbal exchanges between surgeons and nurses. Presumably if you were to develop a device that monitors noise through a light system, then music would affect this?Sharon-Marie WeldonDivision of Surgery, Department of Surgery and Cancer, Faculty of MedicineImperial College London, QEQM, St Mary’s Hospital10th FloorSouthWharf RoadLondon W2 1NYUK s.weldon@imperial.ac.uk
