At any time during your studies, you may need support and advice for non-academic problems which may affect your study and your life at the university such as mental and physical health or financial difficulties.

Who can help you

EEE Student Wellbeing Advisor

Our department's Student Wellbeing Advisor, Kelly Greenwood, enhances the support students receive from their personal tutors and works collaboratively with Personal Tutors and Senior Tutors to provide wellbeing advice, support and mentoring to students.

All students can make appointments to speak to Kelly about a range of non-academic issues such as settling into College life and independent living, relationships, friendships or family worries, mental health, physical health, loneliness, accommodation, financial difficulties or any issue that is having an impact on a student’s wellbeing and academic progress.

Kelly can provide access to self-help resources, deliver workshops, and is available to speak to students confidentially on a one-to-one basis. One-to-one support is intended to be short-term for students who require a quick response to wellbeing issues. Following an initial appointment, Kelly can signpost and refer students who require more specialist services or agencies, both internal and external.

Kelly will also run a series of workshops throughout the academic year with a focus on developing the tools for academic success and managing mental and emotional wellbeing.

There are also nominated departmental contacts for students with disabilities:  Ms Emma Rainbow.

Undergraduate students: You are also encouraged to contact your Personal Tutor, or the Teaching Office, who may refer you to the UG Senior Tutor (Professor Fobelets) or to the Student Wellbeing Advisor.

Department Personal and Senior Tutor

Undergraduate students

The Senior Tutor supports undergraduate students across all years and acts as a conduit to the wider range of support available in the College.

The operation of the Personal Tutorial System is monitored by the Senior Tutor. Students with concerns about the feedback via tutorials can contact the Senior Tutor directly or via their year representative and the issue can also be raised at the Student Staff Committee.

Every undergraduate student is assigned a personal tutor from the academic staff. In first year, tutees have a timetabled meeting with their tutors once every two weeks in groups of three. For most meetings, problems will have been set in advance and students are expect to discuss their answers during the tutorial. This allows tutors not only to help students but also build a picture of how each student is learning and whether further advice on study habits is needed. The remaining tutorial time is used for broader discussion of university life. One-to-one meetings with tutees are arranged at the beginning of each term in order to reflect on progress and adaption to university. Personal tutors are available for ad hoc individual meetings at students' request and particularly in the case of students facing difficulties or concerns.

Tutoring arrangements for second year students are identical to those of the first year but a new Personal Tutor will be assigned. In the third year, the number of timetabled tutorials is reduced, although meetings can be arranged on request. Personal tutorials in the third year tend to concentrate on choice of optional modules, preparation for industrial placements, future career and general learning strategies. In the fourth year students are allocated a final year tutor to provide support in the closing stages of the programme and the transition to higher degrees or employment. Students are asked to seek help from previous years' tutors or their individual project supervisor for wellbeing support.

Postgradute Personal Tutors

Postgraduate Tutor

MSc & PhD students have a Senior Postgraduate Tutor, Dr Imad Jaimoukha. You can talk to Dr Jaimoukha about wellbeing issues, and he acts as a conduit to the wider range of support available in the College. The Course Administrators and Course Directors and Postgraduate Manager, are also available to help you.

Personal Tutors

  • It is important for the students to trust their Personal Tutor and for students to feel confident to share issues they might be facing. The tutor might be able to advise and prevent issues from becoming problems.
  • Conversations are strictly confidential.
  • Personal Tutors are enablers, who have been where you are now, and may provide advice on how to improve your experience.
  • Personal Tutors will only take actions with the student’s consent, and students can rest assured that safeguarding measures will be put in place.

MSc: Students will be allocated a Personal Tutor from their research area during enrollement. Tutorials should help students to stay engaged, connected, and have the opportunity to meet other students from their cohort. Tutors may provide also general advice on choices of optional modules, projects and career advice. It is expected that, besides the scheduled meetings, students may contact tutors for ad-hoc meetings or through emails.
PhD: Students will be allocated a Personal Tutor once they have settled into their PhD and can be useful if there is an issue students wish to discuss outside of their academic group.

MSc and PhD students can also speak to Student Wellbeing Advisor Kelly Greenwood. Please send an email to Kelly Greenwood to book an appointmnet.
Imperial Student Support Zone has comprehensive details of all support and advice available, including emergency contacts.

EESoc 'Parents'

Our Department's student society EESoc runs a 'Parent Scheme' for undergraduates.

The aim is for continuing students to pair up with new students at the start of the academic year to enable them to settle better and more quickly into life at College, both academically and socially.
