A range of staff across our departments are involved in providing student support. We want to ensure that they have access to the resources and training they need to support our students effectively.

Faculty of Engineering SfS Network

In 2018-19 we established the Faculty of Engineering SfS Network. The network provides staff with an opportunity to reflect on recent student issues, learn from each other and share best practice.

Training opportunities and online resources

The following Faculty and College-wide training opportunities are available to staff in roles supporting students:

  • Senior Tutors. A summary of the role of a Senior Tutor (UG and PGT) is available. In 2018-19, the role of Postgraduate tutor was renamed Senior Tutor (PGR).
  • Senior Tutor induction for staff new in post. Please contact Komal Patel (komal.patel@imperial.ac.uk) for more information.
  • Personal Tutors Health and Wellbeing Guide. The College has developed a Personal Tutors’ guide, which includes useful advice on supporting student health and wellbeing. Further details on health and wellbeing are available.
  • Personal Tutoring training. The Educational Development Unit (EDU) runs a one-day workshop for staff who are (or will soon be personal tutors). Register for training.
  • Mental Health First Aid Lite. You can register for College training.
  • Active Bystander. The Faculty of Engineering offers Active Bystander training for staff. Please contact Su Nandy (s.nandy@imperial.ac.uk) for more information.
  • Unconscious Bias. The Faculty of Engineering offers Unconscious Bias training for staff. Please contact Su Nandy (s.nandy@imperial.ac.uk) for more information

Positive communication for SfS

Summary: Equipping delegates with skills to communicate positively, manage/prevent conflict, manage expectations, communicate assertively, hold difficult conversations and negotiate constructively (verbal and email), including body language.

Summer CPD for SfS

Summary: There will be a number of lunchtime CPD sessions over the summer, covering topics mentioned in the 'mental health must know' session. Specifically, these will include: stress/anxiety/depression/psychosis, suicide prevention, self-harming, sexual assault, ADHD/autism, addiction & eating disorders, debt/financial issues, time management for students.

Evaluations will be carried out after every session so that future sessions can be further bespoke to your needs as SfS. If there are any topics you would like to see covered that aren't currently listed, please contact Lorraine CraigPhil Power or Komal Patel.

The Faculty Senior Tutor for Engineering, Lorraine Craig, is available for additional support and guidance, particularly in relation to more sensitive or complicated academic and personal student matters. Find further information and contact details.
