Under the Equality Act 2010, race is a protected characteristic  that refers to an individual's:

  • colour
  • nationality
  • ethnic or national origins

The College recognises that, in order to help fulfil its mission to deliver world-class scholarship, education and research in science, engineering and medicine, it must ensure equality of opportunity, good race relations and eliminate discrimination. In 2018 the College signed up as a member of the Race Equality Charter.

Imperial's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy (pdf)‌ underpin the College's vision and mission, and include the College's aims and actions on race. These actions include our IMPACT talent development programme for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) employees.

Imperial was shortlisted in the 2014 Race for Opportunity Awards, Transparency, Monitoring & Action Award category. Our shortlisting means we have been awarded a Business in the Community Big Tick.
