working together

Pump priming initiatives aim to generate new capabilities and understanding at the College, supporting Affiliates in bringing together expertise across faculties and departments, together with external stakeholders, to develop novel, interdisciplinary research ideas.

The Institute will support up to three pump-priming awards per annum, offered primarily as six month Post Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) positions. Funds will only be available for direct costs associated with staff time, consumables or travel,  up to a value of around £25,000 per award. Up to two of these awards will be reserved to support outcomes of capacity building workshops, with the remainder awarded through an open call.

We particularly welcome ideas within our priority themes in development, which include:

  • Achieving our decarbonisation pathways
  • Technology for a low-carbon and resilient world
  • Natural capital
  • Chemicals and the environment
  • Health, climate and other co-benefits of climate action
  • Reaching environmental goals in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Energy governance
  • Climate change and water (adaptation)
  • Climate finance
  • The circular economy
  • Negative emissions technology
  • Behaviour change
  • Extreme weather events

Requirements

It is expected that teams being funded will submit a substantial bid for external funding within 12 months of this support being awarded. This should enable the area of research to be established beyond the initial support from the Institute. Successful applicants are also expected to produce a clearly designed plan for further developing the area of research, and for appropriate stakeholder engagement and research translation.

How to apply

Applicants are encouraged to discuss their ideas with the Institute prior to submitting a proposal, which will be reviewed by a panel convened by the Institute. Applications close on 31 July 2018.
