Swarm robots at the UK Robotics Week LaunchIn every summer, a series of events and activities are held to celebrate the UK's technological leadership in robotics and autonomous systems, and to engage the nation’s schools, colleges and universities in developing the digital skills needed to drive the UK’s future economy.

UAVWith the global market for service and industrial robots expected to reach $59.5 billion by 2020, the UK government has identified robotics as one of the 8 Great Technologies central to the future growth of the UK economy. The initiative is being coordinated by the EPSRC UK-RAS Network and partner universities.

One of central public engagement events run by the Network is the School Robot Competition, an exciting national competition and a joint project of the UK-RAS Network and Twinkl. It is open to all UK schoolchildren aged from 8 – 14 years.

To enter school groups must sign upp and download a specially designed an augmented reality app that enable school children to create virtual robots that can move across challenging space environments and complete a range of tasks.

The free augmented reality app is available to download on the Apple App Store and Google Play, and the web-based version is available online. The competition aims to help school children to boost their team building, science and coding skills whilst learning about the exciting world of robotics.

Children will also be invited to submit robotics-inspired essays and artwork. The School Robot Competition is designed to develop children’s interest and skills in a range of subjects, including digital skills, science, technology, engineering and biology, and is open to all schoolchildren aged 4 -14 years old. The competition will be designed to engage both girls and boys with STEM subjects.

In addition to the School Robot Competition, the UK Robotics Week (#UKRW20) will include the finals of a series of international academic challenges in which leading robotic research groups from around the world will come to the UK to demonstrate the very latest robotic technology, including:

UK Robotics Week adds focus to a thriving programme of existing robotics activities that take place throughout the year. By linking to other key events in the robotics calendar, such as EU Robotics Week and UK RAS SIG, UK Robotics Week aims to ensure that robotics remains high on the agenda as one of the transformative technologies of today and tomorrow.

Now in it’s 5th year, the UK Robotics Week is the leading UK event in robotics and automated systems, with over 165 events – including 54 core events organised by the Network – featured in our programme last year.

Held annually in the last week of June it showcases hundreds of robotics events, ranging from competitions, lectures, open days, symposia, hackathons, festivals, workshops, and film premieres throughout the UK.

The week concludes with the highlight event the International Robotics Showcase  will be held at IET London on the 26th June 2020.

This one-day event will feature exclusive live demos of the latest UK innovations plus insights from world-renowned technologists.
