The median pay gap is the difference between the midpoints in the ranges of hourly earnings of men and women and BME and white staff. It takes all salaries in the sample, lines them up in order from lowest to highest, and picks the middle salary. We believe this is a more representative measure of the pay gap at Imperial because it is not affected by outliers – a few individuals at the top or bottom of the range.

The mean gender pay gap is the difference between the average hourly earnings of men and women and BME staff and white staff.

The main reason for both of these gaps is that we have more men than women in our senior, more well-paid roles. This is also true for having  more white staff than BME staff in senior, more well-paid roles. There has however been a small shift, with a higher proportion of women represented in the upper-middle quartiles compared to 2020.

At the moment, the gender pay gap figures for the Higher Education sector have not been reported. There also continues to be no official Higher Education sector figures reported for ethnicity pay gaps.
