What is Facility Time?

Facility Time is the provision of paid or unpaid time off from an employee’s normal role to undertake Trade Union duties and activities as a Trade Union representative. There is a statutory entitlement to reasonable paid time off for undertaking union duties.

Trade Union (Facility Time Publication Requirements) Regulations 2017

The number of College employees who were Trade Union officials during the period 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 was 19 (2018: 15), who were all full-time College employees. The percentage of time spent by them on Facility Time fell in the 1 – 50% band. The cost of this activity amounts to £138,291 (2018: £134,000) representing 0.03% (2018: 0.03%) of the total pay bill in the relevant period. Of the total paid Facility Time, the proportion of hours spent on paid Trade Union activities was 9.8% (2018: 9.8%).

What are Trade Union duties and activities?

Trade Union duties can inculde*: collective bargaining, disciplinary meetings, investigation meetings, suspension meetings, and health and safety meetings.

Trade Union activities can inculde*: attending workplace meetings to discuss and vote on outcome of negotiations with College, meeting full time officers, voting in union elections, and branch, area or regional meetings.
