ICE - Key Skills

Now that you have completed your current Personal Development Plan with records of your achievements, it is time to refine and amalgamate these in a way that can be transferred to a CV or application form or referred to in interviews.

Completing a key skills template for each skill will help you to do this. (For more information on how to complete a key skills template, please see below.)

This final stage in the process is important because CVs should maximise your experiences whilst remaining succinct. Application forms and interview questions normally demand a focused and analytical reply:

Example Questions:

Describe a situation where you had to work effectively in a group or a team to achieve a shared goal?
(Price Waterhouse Coopers)

Can you think of setbacks, either at university or while on work experience, that you've successful overcome?
(KPMG)

Employers also recognise the benefits of Personal Development Planning:

GlaxoSmithKline asks applicants to look “back over your life, [and] tell us about three things which have contributed to your personal development”, whilst >Goldman Sachs warns interview candidates to “think about your strengths and weaknesses and be prepared to discuss both.”

How to complete a Key Skills Template

1. You will need to complete a separate template for each of your skills.

2. A Key Skills template can be accessed by clicking on the link below:

Key Skills template [Word, 13 KB].

3. Refer to your Personal Development Plan and using the "Evidence" column, select the records which best illustrate the particular skill that you are focusing on.

4. Next read the appropriate conceptual framework, contained in the links below, and use this information and the "useful words" list given to complete your key skills record for that skill.

5. Once you have completed your Key Skills template for one skill, save that template and then start again with a blank template and a new skill. Carry on doing this until you have completed a template for each of the skills that are important to you.

You should now have a full set of interview answers at your fingertips!
