You will be given the opportunity during the course of your studies to work in groups. Indeed, some Departments/Divisions encourage their students to participate in group work, or group projects such as designing projects and field-work.
In addition, many employers value team-sports highly. You should therefore consider getting involved in these type of team activities, or in organising society events through club and society committees. The Students' Union website contains details of all student clubs.
Charity, Voluntary and Community OpportunitiesVoluntary work, charity projects or community initiatives will often provide you with the chance to work with others in a team situation. There are a wide variety of projects in all sectors. These can range from an initiative which requires volunteers to give up a few hours of their time each week to summer projects abroad which take place over several months.
Working Abroad and ExchangesWorking abroad on exchanges, or at holiday camps, offers the same benefits as it is likely that you will find yourself working as a team-leader for children, or as part of the larger team of volunteers. These experiences can also help to develop your communication and organisation skills. Try any of the following links for a start, or contact your local Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Skills Exchange or charity shops in your area for more information about local opportunities:
Working Abroad/Exchanges
Part-time or summer work experience can provide you with valuable opportunities, and prove to employers that you have more behind you than just an academic qualification. Check your local newspapers, the Careers Service notice board and the Prospects “Focus on Work Experience” booklet (this can be found at the Careers Service) to see what is available. It is also worth looking at Job, Prospects and/or Opportunities Magazines, along with the websites listed below, for details of openings:
Employers provide opportunities for improving your team-working skills; check the “Career Choice” booklet from the Careers Service for listings of employer-led skills workshops and seminars. There are also a wide range of internships and company placement schemes, which not only give you the opportunity to develop a number of skills, but will also provide you with an insight into a specific company or career. For more information on such placement schemes take a look at the Prospects website and check the Careers Service notice board, "Internships Directory" and the Careers website regularly. (Competition for these tends to be tough.)
