What did you do before joining the training scheme?
I graduated from university in 2017, with a degree in English Literature. I then made the transition from student to staff, working for a year in Exeter as a Higher Education Project Officer, assisting on a variety of education initiatives at the University. During my time as a student, I held committee positions in two student groups, represented Academic and Employability societies within my Student’s Guild and directed student theatre.
What attracted you to the scheme?
From my prior experience as a university staff member, I knew that a career in Higher Education would be incredibly wide-ranging and exciting – it encompasses elements from so many different areas, from student support to social outreach, from project management to public affairs. I was interested in the placement structure of the scheme to experience as much of this variety as possible! The scheme also has a significant focus on continuing professional development, which will prove invaluable as I progress my career and build my CV.
What would be your one tip for applicants?
Demonstrate all your skills and attributes in your written application by providing specific examples of times you have displayed them. On the interview day, be sure to prepare and do your research, but primarily relax and be yourself. There will be plenty of opportunities on the day to show what you can do!
