What did you do before joining the training scheme?
I worked for a Public Affairs agency in Holborn as a Researcher. Before that, I undertook internships in a digital marketing agency and a university communications team. I also did some work experience in an MP’s office in Westminster.
What attracted you to the scheme?
I really enjoyed my placement working in university communications and it got me thinking seriously about working for a university full time. When I came across the Management Training Scheme it seemed like a perfect fit - a chance to experience the breadth of what a university does and how it functions, on a scheme that champions professional development. Above all, I liked the idea of undertaking placements- I didn’t want to be pigeonholed into one department too early on in my career.
What has been the highlight of your time on the scheme?
I project managed the making of four short videos profiling academics and their research. The idea was to follow the story of their research and highlight its potential impact. This involved producing a brief, choosing a film agency, meeting with academics, working closely with the Producer and generally making sure the videos looked great. The videos are used on the College’s website to showcase the immense impact of Imperial’s research.
What has been the biggest challenge?
I was asked to manage an important event for Imperial Business Partners (IBP). IBP events bring together executives from companies with strong interests in research and innovation to improve links with the College and develop insight. The event was called The Future of Work and explored key attributes that Imperial graduates would need, to compete in the future job market. I’d never managed an event before, apart from the odd one at university and it made me realise just how much work was involved.
