Imperial's Department of Mathematics trains professional mathematicians to pursue the study of scientific and technological problems by mathematical methods, and to undertake research at the cutting edge of the field. It is one of the strongest and most active mathematics departments in the UK, and is divided into four sections (Applied Mathematics and Mathematical PhysicsMathematical FinancePure Mathematics and Statistics), which support extensive postgraduate programmes and research.
