The Department offers four MSc courses; each programme consists of a wide selection of taught courses, together with a substantial research project, lasting 12 months (full-time) or 24 months (part-time).
The taught courses are designed to extend a student’s knowledge of the area significantly beyond a BSc course; the project is intended to develop the student’s ability to work independently on an advanced topic, and to write a concise and coherent account of this work. The project is carried out under the supervision of a member of staff, who agrees the project with the student. For Mathematics and Finance, the project is generally carried out on a placement, typically in a bank.
MSc in Applied and Pure
MSc in Applied Mathematics
The goal of the Applied MSc is to offer excellent training in modern applied mathematics. The breadth and depth of the courses and projects offered to our students, in applied mathematics and mathematical physics, make this MSc programme unique. They also provide the necessary background for further postgraduate studies (PhD) and for an academic career.
MSc in Pure Mathematics
The MSc in Pure Mathematics will equip you with a range of mathematical skills in problem solving, project work and presentation, enabling you to take a prominent role in a wide spectrum of employment and research. We offer a wide range of lecture courses in the core areas of analysis, geometry and topology, number theory, algebra and combinatorics. In addition to taking lectured courses, you will also complete a written project in one of the core areas.
MSc in Maths Finance and Stats
MSc in Mathematics and Finance
Mathematical finance is a subject that is both mathematically challenging and deployed every day by sophisticated practitioners in the financial markets. We provide you with everything you need to get into this area at a level where you can understand–and contribute to–industry practice and the latest research. Some of our courses give the necessary finance and economics background; others provide instruction in fundamental mathematics. Scientific computing is an integral part of the programme.
MSc in Statistics
Statistical ideas and tools are used in almost all employment sectors including banking/finance, government, medical research, the pharmaceutical industry and internet companies. This one-year full-time programme provides outstanding training both in theoretical and applied statistics, with sufficient flexibility to allow you to develop your own specialist interests. The course will equip you with a range of statistical skills, including problem-solving, project work and presentation, to enable you to take prominent roles in a wide spectrum of employment and research.
