The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) announced an initial £5.7 million of funding for pilot projects that will open up existing high-quality education resources from UK higher education institutions to the world.

The Higher Education Academy and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) have been working in partnership to deliver the 12-month pilot projects which ends in April 2010. The projects run at institutional, subject and individual level along with accompanying support services.

The School of Medicine at Imperial College, along with nine other UK medical schools, was successful in a bid on the Subject Strand. The project has been led by the Higher Education Academy – Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. As a result of this project many useful toolkits have been produced to support the process of making Open Educational Resources available. The toolkits cover the following areas: intellectual property rights, copyright and patient consent, among others. Information about the toolkits produced will be made available to the Imperial community shortly.

What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons

Creative Commons (CC) is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. It provides free, easy-to-use legal tools that give everyone - from individual creators through to major companies and institutions - a simple, standardized way to pre-clear usage rights to creative work they own the copyright to. CC licenses let people easily change their copyright terms from the default of “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.”
