MRC Studentships are currently only available for studies which have not yet commenced. Please ensure you read these eligibility criteria before making an application.
Applicants should hold a first class or a good upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent). For these studentships applicants will also hold or expect to receive a master's degree (or equivalent by research experience), to be in an area relevant to the proposed PhD.
Studentships awarded based on predicted grades will be conditional upon final results.
To be eligible for a full MRC studentship (stipend and university fees), candidates must be able to demonstrate a settled status in the United Kingdom. Detailed guidance regarding residence eligibility is available in the residence requirements section of the MRC website.
To be eligible for a full award, a student must have:
- settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay.
- been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for three years prior to the start of the studentship. This means they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences).
- not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education (this does not apply to UK or EU nationals).
EU fees-only studentships
Students from EU countries other than the UK are generally eligible for a fees-only award. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK. This covers the cost of the university fees, conference fund and Research Training Supplement Grant, but does not include the monthly stipend.
Exceptions will be made on residence eligibility for applicants who hold exceptional skills in the area of Digital Technologies and Informatics For Health. Such applications can be submitted, but can only be considered under the terms of the MRC Scarce Strategic Skills guidance.
