The one-year Molecular Science and Engineering MRes is designed to create a new generation of 'multilingual', transdisciplinary scientists and engineers. Multidisciplinary graduates are in high demand, in academia and industry, as companies seek to enhance their workforce with skilled scientists and engineers who can work effectively and collaboratively to tackle the challenges they face.
The MRes programme includes two introductory modules and taught modules in Making, Modelling, Measuring, Manufacturing, and Designing molecules and materials, plus a 6 month research project. The MRes in Molecular Science and Engineering is a full-time, 12 month post-graduate course. Deadlines for coursework and assessments run through the year, with the final assessment taking place in mid-late September.
The course is taught by over 25 academics from across two faculties and 7 departments at Imperial, listed on our teaching staff page. You can also find out more about the MSE MRes Course Directors and Module Leaders.
The multidisciplinary research project includes a 3 month placement with one of our industrial partners, which takes place between March and July. Take a look at the Research Projects to find out more and read about some of our students' placement experiences. The research project counts towards 60% of the overall mark. You will be supervised by two Imperial academics from different departments, and at least one industrial supervisor.
The course also includes professional skills training, delivered by Imperial's Graduate Schools, and workshops on "creating ideas for global challenges", "researching and validating new ideas", and "a question of talent", which are delivered by an external partner.
Teaching takes place Mondays to Fridays, between 9 am and 5 pm, mostly at Imperial's South Kensington campus but with a few classes in the new Molecular Sciences Research Hub at the White City campus. Most taught sessions take place in Term 1 (October to December), with some professional skills and assessment sessions taking place throughout the year. The reserach project starts in February; you are expected to work on your project during working hours Monday to Friday - you may need to put in some additional time at evenings and weekends, but breaks are important!

- No more than 1 page long (11-12 point text size, sans serif font e.g. Arial)
- At the beginning, make it clear why you are interested in the MSE MRes course, and what your relevant experience is
- Clearly state what research areas and you are most interested in
- Clearly provide a summary of relevant previous research project(s) that you have undertaken

- do include: academic qualifications and degree classification/grade (final/predicted); information about previous research project(s) and supervisors; information about any time spent in industry; experience with relevant analytical/synthetic techniques, programming, etc

If you are a home or EU student who meets certain criteria, you may be able to apply for a Postgraduate Master’s Loan of up to £10,280 from the UK government. The loan is not means-tested, and you can choose whether to put it towards your tuition fees or living costs.
