Victor's experience

How did you find the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study?Victor Riesgo

I enjoyed the freedom to pursue what interests me, and to try and answer challenging research questions. However, moving to London and adapting to a higher responsibility of postgraduate studies can be a stressful although enriching experience.

How did you cope with the course workload?

I found the workload to be very high at times during the course but the positive and team attitude that we had as a class helped me coping with the difficulties.

I played the clarinet in the Imperial College Symphony Orchestra.

How supportive are the staff in the department?

One of the best aspects of the MRes is that you get to know the multidisciplinary community of research staff at Imperial that is incredibly supportive and open-minded. I found that I always had someone to talk to about my interests and concerns.

What are the facilities like?

Excellent classroom with lots of space and teaching facilities. Laptops were provided and online recording of the classes were of great help.

How did you find the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study?Yijun Yu

I felt the transition was quite smooth. Apart from a refresh and consolidation for the main knowledge of undergraduate study (e.g. thermodynamics), the MSE MRes courses also provide a review for the upper level studies such like modelling, machine learning etc. The 3 months’ taught programme is a very good transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study, and excellent training for a future in research.

How did you cope with the course workload?

In the first 3 months, the course workload was hard for me as I am not familiar with some of the contents (as I am chemistry background, I studied some chem engineering courses the first time). However, my classmates from different background helped me a lot. I think we all get a lot of help from each other and this is the great benefit to the interdiscipline.

How supportive are the staff in the department?

Great, tutors are all very responsible with the courses they teach. Our course managers are very helpful and open to suggestion from students.

What are the facilities like?

Excellent, we have a big classroom which is a good place for study and group discussion. Laptops are provided. The resources from library is also abundant.
