Information for current students

We encourage our students to seek out additional training opportunities and compete in their respective areas. This page provides details of competitions, opportunities and funding schemes that will be of specific interest to Imperial MRC DTP students.

Biotechnology
YES competition

This innovative competition starts by training students on technology transfer and commercialisation of bioscience, and then facilitates a 'Dragon's den' style presentation where teams of applicants present their business plans for an imaginary biotech start-up company. Two teams from each workshop are selected for the final and winners of the competion receive £2,500.

The MRC sponsor this competition and a limited number of places are allocated for MRC-funded students. The Biotechnology YES website provides a great deal of information and FAQs in relation to this competition.

Max Perutz science writing award

This award is aimed at recognising outstanding communication among MRC scientists. The competition asks MRC researchers to answer the question ‘why does my research matter’ in no more than 800 words.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to a science writing masterclass and the awards ceremony, where the winner will be announced and receive a £1,500 prize. Full information is available on the competition page of the MRC website.

AMS/MRC policy internship scheme

This prestigious scheme enables successful students to spend three months at the Academy of Medical Sciences office in central London, and gain experience of medical science policy. Funding to support a three month PhD extension is provided. The AMS website provides more information and contact details for queries.

Imperial MRC supplement scheme

All MRC-funded students are eligible to apply for funding through this scheme. Please see the supplement scheme page for full details.

Imperial MRC Colloquium essay prize

The annual Colloquium events offer an opportunity to take part in the essay prize. Essays are marked by a panel - two to three winners are announced on the day and presented with a certificate and prize.
