The Higher Education Academy's Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) 2016/17

TeamA few years ago, Pietro Spanu, of the Department of Life Sciences, attended a workshop on TBL organised by Kate Ippolito of the EDU. He thought this was an ideal teaching method to help with the challenges faced with introducing and sustaining interactive learning and teaching in large class settings, coupled with the requirement of providing relevant and useful feeding back within short timeframes with the resources available.

Working with Pietro, Moira Sarsfield, FoNS Senior Learning Technologist, developed a new method for using TBL coupled with BlackBoard and automated scoring/administration of the immediate feedback and animated group discussions (essential components of TBL – which traditionally relies on cards/scratch cards/paper).  This was piloted on a second year undergraduate compulsory course. Following the pilot's success, Pietro and Moira have now introduced TBL to several courses, where appropriate, in both the Biological Sciences and Biochemistry degree streams.

Pietro, Moira and Kate, pictured, have now been nominated for a Higher Education Academy CATE award.

Further details can be found on the HEA CATE webpages, including a profile of the team.
